Pilot Training Academy

Waterford, Ireland
Education
30,000 m2
2010

In a response to a growing shortage of qualified commercial Pilots worldwide, our client appointed us to work on the first Multi Pilot Licence training academy. There were further plans to build 20 facilities around the world in key strategic locations. This is a purpose built facility and fully equipped with the latest aviation training equipment which can operate 24 hours, 7 days a week. The new training academy is housed in a modern 3,000m2 facility (excluding aircraft hangers) which is designed to the highest international standards. The entrance to the academy leads into an open plan reception lobby, which is inviting to student, staff, and visitors. The building consists of a main atrium which separates the classrooms and examination rooms from the flight simulation hangers while still providing good visibility between both types of rooms. The academy also contains a canteen, Gym, student and staff lounges. The design creates a light-filled training academy with no corridors or institutional barriers where students, faculty and visitors can thrive in their individual and collective endeavors. The architectural approach was informed by the philosophy of creating open, transparent, and compact spaces to encourage integration and communication between students and aviation trainers in a state of the art aviation training facility.
